luang prabang laos

Luang Prabang monarchy that had become the center of Laos since the 14th century a small town located on the Mekong river. Expressed as a World Heritage City by UNESCO in 1995 because they are saving history. Registered about 700 old buildings are protected and well cared for, among others there were 21 buildings included in the excellent category. Local architecture blends with French-style main attraction, including stage homes that are very similar to Malay house. This beautiful little town surrounded by many seputaran wat in the city. Penduduknyapun very friendly and open to newcomers. Means of transportation such as tuk-tuks and motorcycle taxis can be easily obtained, though typically we choose to walk, because the distance is not too far anyway.

We followed the road Thanon Phothisalat, the main street in Luang Prabang. Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham is the first building that we singgahi, standing in the 19th century and has a classic architectural style typical of Luang Prabang with a 5 layer roof. Not far from there, standing with the magnificent Royal Palace Museum (Haw Kham). Founded in 1904 as the residence of King Sisavang Vong, has a blend of Laotian and French architecture. Now the palace is a museum that holds the remains of the Lao monarchy until the last king, King Savang Vatthana. He reigned from 1959-1976 before being arrested by the communist government then in power. At that time tens of thousands of people (including family work) are sent to 'Re-education camp' by the new government. What is interesting in this museum is a painting of the king made by an artist of Russia in the early 20th century. If we look at shoes in the painting's left leg while walking switching positions from left to right or vice versa, it was as the toe is to follow the direction we go.

In the afternoon we menititi 328 stairs to reach the top of the hill Phousi, which stands Wat Si chom. From the above we can see the sights of the city of Luang Prabang and around the Mekong river. Towards sunset the atmosphere in the hill Phousi increasingly crowded by people who want to enjoy the sunset. It's a beautiful view from atop this hill. That night we had dinner at around Thanon Phothisalat, in this area there are many cafes and restaurants with food choices. The price is relatively not too expensive.

The second day in Luang Prabang, after eating breakfast at the hotel we visited Wat and Wat Ho Siang That which was situated adjacent to each other. We walked through the market, housing residents along the river, enjoying the atmosphere of the city, while occasionally stopping at shops offering souvenirs of Laos. After lunch, we hired a motor boat to the Pak Ou Cave. Although the sun was shining brightly, the cold is still felt when we were on the way down the Mekong River for about 1.5 hours. The cave is situated on the edge of this river can be reached by climbing the stairs from the riverside. According to legend, this cave was discovered by King Setthatirat in the 16th century, which is then used as a place of worship. Tham Ting Cave is located at the bottom and more easily accessible, while Tham Phum cave is situated on a hill and need to use a flashlight if we want to explore it. Inside this cave, we can find a lot of Buddha statues in various sizes, and many of them are already hundreds of years old.

The trip back to Luang Prabang was very enjoyable afternoon, watching the people around who take advantage of the Mekong River watershed for their daily needs. The atmosphere is similar to life in Indonesia. That day, we enjoyed dinner in Indochina Restaurant, a restaurant located in one of the older buildings are preserved very well. As expected, this place is always crowded by tourists.

Called the "City of Temple", because it's a lot of wat in this small town. We still have time to visit several such wat Wat Saen, Wat Sop, Wat Si Muang and Wat Si Khun Bun Heuang. Most of wat is open to the public and does not charge a fee. A visit to Luang Prabang not feel complete if we have not had time to visit the Wat Xieng Thong, one of the largest and most beautiful wat here. By paying money into 8.000 kip wat we can enjoy the beauty of Luang Prabang architectural style. Built in 1560 by King Setthatirat and is now one of the main tourist attraction. In the afternoon we returned rent a motorboat, this time to see the Kuang Xi waterfall. Travel by boat about 1 hour followed by a tuk-tuk to the waterfall location. This place can also be reached directly from Luang Prabang by using a motor vehicle. Quite interesting tourist sites with terraced waterfalls, and in certain parts of the tourists are allowed to swim and enjoy the cool natural water.

Luang Prabang may not be as popular as the other excursions in Asia, but it saves a small town charm. Under the supervision of UNESCO, the city has always kept its authenticity though still open to foreign tourists visited the country. Lao Aviation from Luang Prabang to bring us back to Vientiane, and the next day I crossed the border of Laos - Thailand via the Friendship bridge to get to Udon Thani, Thailand. Then I flew back to Singapore via Bangkok. Laos, a short drive that holds many memories and new experiences.
